Biography

Harold B. Weiss, MPH, PhD, joined the faculty of the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Center for Injury Research and Control (CIRCL) in November 1998. He has more than 25 years experience in the practice of injury control, including consultation on local projects, working at the state level in Wisconsin, where he directed the injury prevention program from 1985-1989, and, since 1992, in academia. He served as director of CIRCL from November 2002 to February 2008.

Dr. Weiss did his undergraduate work at the University of California and received a masters degrees in environmental health and epidemiology from the University of Minnesota and his doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.

His 40 publications and numerous presentations have spanned the gamut of injury control topics including injury surveillance, school violence prevention, baby walkers, pesticide poisonings, bicycle injuries, transportation safety, farm injuries, hospital discharge data, data linkage, elderly falls, recreational injuries and ferret bites, among other areas.

In addition to his dissertation research on fetal injuries, his current work focuses on trauma and pregnancy and motorcycle head injuries. He was president of the Society for Advancement of Injury and Violence Research (SAVIR) and chair of the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Section.
