Biography

Peter E. Sheptak, MD, is clinical professor emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery

Dr. Sheptak graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1959 and earned his MD degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963. He obtained general surgical and neurosurgical training at the University of Pittsburgh between 1963 and 1968. During his residency training, he was awarded a one-year postdoctoral fellowship by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Sheptak joined the clinical neurosurgical faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 1968 and became a full-time faculty member in 1997. His areas of specialization have included spinal surgery, acoustic tumor surgery, and sports medicine as it pertains to neurosurgery. During his career, he has served at numerous local hospitals and has been chief of neurosurgery at the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System and the St. Francis Medical Health System. He also has been the team neurosurgeon for the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins for the past 20 years.

Known as a consummate, energetic and gentlemanly surgeon, Dr. Sheptak has been one of the major teaching influences at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery for almost 40 years. He has assisted in the training of almost 100 neurosurgical practitioners in the United States and abroad.

In 1988, Dr. Sheptak was selected as a ‘Distinguished Graduate’ of Butler High School in his native Butler, PA, where he also sponsors the Sheptak Distinguished Graduate Scholarship for graduating seniors.

In May of 2006, the Peter E. Sheptak Endowed Professorship was formally inaugurated at the University of Pittsburgh to honor the career contributions of Dr. Sheptak. William C. Welch, MD, was selected as the first chair holder. In January of 2008, Dr. Sheptak retired from active clinical practice. He continues to participate in teaching, conferences and as a resident advisor.
